Ability Hearing and Balance is first and foremost a Tasmanian family business. “We understand the very competitive landscape our small business was heading into when we decided to startup a brand new hearing clinic chain in Tassie again,” – Heidi Modrovich, CEO.
One of our first priorities was to create a business that didn’t simply incorporate innovation but is created from it. It is a very competitive market, you have to force yourself to look at things from different angles to come up with something novel.

Many clients, especially around our Kingston clinic would say, “There are three hearing clinics in the shopping centre, how are you going to compete?”
“As a local business owner, I have to keep the faith that our ideal customer/client will innately understand our purpose and the energy that we bring to the community when we are clear on why we are doing it. You bring your purpose to the table. I am in no disillusion that we have taken on a huge task as a young, local family in business competing with national chains with massive budgets. But, we are not trying to mass cater to everyone who needs hearing help. And, that’s the difference.”

Introducing The Sound Room
Maunam TM – The Sound Room – came about as we were looking at our clinic design. We wanted a unique Tasmanian feel to our clinics that locals would immediately recognise as feeling like a “homecoming”. We also wanted to make it functional clinically.
“I woke up one morning with this hit of inspiration! It just hit me, we needed to literally “build” our point of difference so people are physically embodied in that space of differentiation. A Sound Room – beautiful, Tasmanian, and clinically functional!”
“Once the inspiration took hold, that was it. I knew we had to find a way to build it. Both Nick and I have worked for decades in clinics where hearing tests were done just in the office. Nothing exciting, and non-inspiring… Just another day in the office for the audiologist and the client.
“It didn’t signify anything transformational to me. Getting a hearing test can be such a daunting experience for so many people, it should be acknowledged. What we do, as Audiologists, is to facilitate what could potentially be a massive transformation in someone’s life, their connections to loved ones. That is a responsibility rarely acknowledged nowadays as the industry has moved more and more toward only counting dollars and enforcing unrealistic KPIs on their Audiologists.
Maunam TM – our Sound Room – serves as a reminder of who we are. We aren’t just there to sell people hearing aids. Maunam TM stands for the stillness and quiet that is within all of us in our pure human potential. Having a hearing loss is no limit to that potential. When you step into our Sound Room, you can be confident that your test results are accurate, that your Audiologist is inspired to give you the best care. When you step out, it is a first step into a different perspective of how correcting a hearing loss will re-open your world in ways, perhaps you didn’t appreciate before.
“This is my hope for our clients anyway… to have a much more positive and engaging acknowledgement of their hearing journey.”
