Our Audiologists have 20 years’ experience working with young children. We offer Hearing & Central Auditory Processing Tests for kids aged 5 and older.
Central Auditory Processing Disorder or CAPD describes deficits in a child’s ability to process and make use of sounds important for language development.
Children will have normal hearing but, still struggle to follow instructions in noisy situations. They may ask for repeats more frequently and become easily distracted. Teachers may notice other learning difficulties.
Because of the crossover of symptoms with other learning deficits, CAPD testing usually forms part of a set of tests performed by different professionals. This includes the audiologist, speech pathologist and/or a child psychologist.
Our Audiologists are experienced in providing CAPD testing and liaising with other professionals in your child’s care plan.
CAPD testing is available for children 5 -12 years old.
Our experienced Audiologists also provide intensive auditory training and classroom amplification systems using auditory processing aids to support APD kids.

After 10 years of running their semi-franchise hearing business, the couple saw a need for an independent, locally owned hearing clinic.
Many clinics in Tasmania are now owned by overseas corporations focusing solely on hearing aid sales. Essential audiology services such as earwax removal, tinnitus management, and children’s hearing are often neglected with the bigger retailers. Clinics owned by a hearing aid manufacturer also limit consumer choice across all brands. On top of this, many smaller Tasmanian clinics have now been taken over by mainland proprietors as a result of retirement in recent years.
Nick and Heidi felt it was important to have an independent and local option for Tasmanians when it comes to their hearing needs. Ability Hearing and Balance is not tied to any hearing aid manufacturer. Our clients have access to all the major brands of hearing aids at the best price. We are also qualified to provide Pensioners with free hearing aids under the Commonwealth Hearing Services Program.
